Sally Ann Shurmur: Random Thoughts As Random As This $&@?! Weather

Columnist Sally Ann Shurmur writes, “I could write about the Legislature, but it seems like everyone else is. I could write about Wyoming’s roads, but tragically, that’s been done plenty.”

I could write about the Legislature, which seems to have folks plenty worked up.

I won’t, except for these few thoughts.

My kids are private school kids, from 3-year-old preschool until they ran out of grades.

I loved the small class sizes, the care their teachers had for them, and that God was a big part of their daily school life.

I was paying an exorbitant amount for their education, as well as funding the public schools. That was my choice, but a little relief  from the double-pay would have been nice.

I know lots of homeschool families, and nearly all of them do it so religion can be part of the school day.  It makes little sense to me that their plan should have to be approved by the public school district.

And finally, if my kid wanted to learn welding, he should have been taught by a welder, who didn’t need a bachelor’s degree in education. And if my other kid wanted to study cosmetology, she should have learned from a cosmetologist who knew the trade.

That’s the end of my legislative wrap up.

Now for Wyoming roads. Ugh.

We were reading the umpteenth story about the tunnel tragedy and Owen said, “You know, we would have died in there. There’s no way I would have had time to get the wheelchair out, get you in it, and get us out of there.”

That’s a lovely thought. I always loved those tunnels, because it meant we were five hours closer to palm trees.

Next time, I guess we’ll drive through town and patronize some of those small businesses whose lives have been turned upside down.

Now that football is over, we have been watching a ton of college basketball. After publicly criticizing Wyoming’s pitiful performance at CSU on Saturday, it was great to see them play tough in the second half on Tuesday at home against Air Force. It’s almost March, and they say anything can happen.

I also watched the Daytona 500 and loved the pageantry at the beginning and the crashes at the end.

And hockey. OMG, hockey!

How did this Wyoming girl get interested in hockey?

Duh. Gordie Howe.

And then when I was in college, I went to Detroit for all of the vacation breaks.

And conveniently, the Lions general manager had twin sons my age who were raised in Canada with the CFL.

So they decided we needed to go watch college hockey and so across the bridge we went, to Windsor, Ontario.

There may have been some drinking involved, but we did watch live hockey. And I was hooked.

The Four Nations deal was the best thing for hockey since The Miracle.

Sure, some guys got hurt and that’s not great for their teams in the second half of the NHL season.

But the format and the fierceness with which the guys played for their home countries is not even close to duplicated in any other sport.

Oh, Canada! Find something else to try to be good at. And stop booing our song.
