‘Unknown Male’ Steals Ambulance From Riverton Hospital, Escapes On Reservation

An “unknown male” got into an ambulance parked in front of a Riverton emergency room at about 2:15 a.m. Sunday, drove off and sparked a chase with law enforcement that ended with his escape on foot into the Wind River Indian Reservation, police say.

While the ambulance sat in front of the emergency room at Riverton’s SageWest Health Care, an “unknown male” got into it and “took off,” Riverton Police Department Capt. Wes Romero told Cowboy State Daily in a Sunday phone interview.

Police chased the male to the Wind River Estates area on the town’s southeast end and tried to stop him, but the ambulance continued toward the Wind River Indian Reservation.

Speeds reached 80 mph on the highway, said Romero.

Once on the reservation, the ambulance backed into a patrol car, affecting its bumper — though “it didn’t do much damage,” Romero said —and it also struck a Fremont County Sheriff’s deputy truck.

The suspect “bailed out on foot, and we weren’t able to locate him,” the captain added.
