Former Wyoming Congresswoman Liz Cheney continues to campaign this week side-by-side with Vice President Kamala Harris, and for as much as Republicans try to minimize and downplay her efforts to undermine former President Donald Trump, they canât help but take a shot at her when given the chance.
On Sunday, Sen. J.D. Vance, Trumpâs running mate, lit into Cheney, calling the lifelong Republican âa resentful, petty, small personâ whose actions against her own party do not show a âloveâ for America.
Cheney sat next to Harris on Monday during a moderated campaign conversation with voters in Pennsylvania where she reiterated her belief that Trump is erratic, unstable and a danger to the countryâs democratic processes.
âI know how quickly democracies can unravel," Cheney said. "And I know that, as Americans, we can become accustomed to thinking, 'Well, we don't have to worry about that here.' But I tell you again, as someone who has seen firsthand how quickly it can happen, that is what is on the ballot."
Cheney represented Wyoming in Congress from 2017-2023 and rose to the third highest Republican position in the House. The daughter of former Vice President Dick Cheney, she was an ideological leader in the conservative movement until she became a party pariah in 2021, when she voted to impeach Trump over his role in the Jan. 6, 2021, riot at the U.S. Capitol.
Since then, she has been a stalwart critic of Trump, even as GOP leaders removed her from leadership positions. In 2022, she lost her bid for reelection when Wyoming voters overwhelmingly chose Rep. Harriet Hageman, a Trump supporter, by a 2-to-1 margin.
At a campaign stop in Wisconsin on Sunday, Vance was asked what he thought of Cheneyâs continued involvement in Harrisâ campaign.
âThatâs too easy, thatâs too easy,â Vance said, as the crowd loudly booed the mention of Cheney. âMy opinion of Liz Cheney is low.â
âIâve known a lot of people in Washington whoâve served with Liz Cheney, and what theyâll tell you to a person is that Liz Cheney is motivated by an obsessive hatred of the people who cost her her Wyoming Congressional seat,â he said. âShe is not motivated by a love of this country. She is a resentful, petty, small person.
âIf Kamala Harris wants to parade her around, sheâs welcome to.â
