Accused of shooting another man after an argument, a 20-year-old Cheyenne man was jailed Tuesday on suspicion of attempted murder, the Cheyenne Police Department says in a statement.
Solomon Nunez could face up to life in prison if charged and convicted of attempted murder through the Laramie County Courts system.
‘Verbal Altercation’
At about 5:35 Tuesday evening, Cheyenne police officers responded to a report of a shooting on East 19th Street in Cheyenne, the statement says. There, they found an adult male with what looked like a gunshot wound.
American Medical Response ambulance arrived and took the man to the Cheyenne Regional Medical Center for treatment.
Officers learned during their investigation that Nunez had a “verbal altercation” with the victim in the basement of a home, the statement says.
“As the argument escalated, Nunez reportedly pulled a firearm and shot him,” it says.
Another man who’d heard the argument reportedly rushed downstairs to intervene in time to witness the shooting.
“Nunez then pointed the firearm in the direction of the second victim, who retreated back up the stairs,” the statement adds.
Pointing a deadly weapon at a person can be charged as aggravated assault, a felony punishable by up to 10 years in prison in Wyoming. However, the police statement does not indicate a recommended aggravated assault charge.
Fled On Foot
Charging documents were not immediately available Wednesday afternoon.
Nunez reportedly fled the home on foot.
Officers secured the scene and “through investigative work” – which was not specified – learned Nunez was at the Pioneer Hotel, the statement says.
Officers evacuated the rooms surrounding the room Nunez had reportedly rented, the statement continues, “out of an abundance of caution.”
They found Nunez’s door open and called out to him to exit.
He complied and was taken into custody without incident, the statement says.
“Keeping our community safe requires teamwork,” said Mark Francisco, Cheyenne Police chief. “I want to commend the patrol officers who quickly located the suspect, as well as the detectives and crime scene investigators who worked late into the night to interview witnesses and gather evidence to build a solid case.
“Also, special thank you to Laramie County Sheriff’s Office deputies and AMR personnel for providing additional assistance and support.”
