Tim’s Observations:
In last Tuesday’s observations, I noted the rapidly fluctuating prices in our western counties. After that report, Cowboy State Daily received an email from a reader, expressing the frustration with the reported prices in Lincoln county. Angie Jennings wrote:
“I don’t know where the costs on the map come from, but it is consistently wrong for our county. I realize some of these prices are as of today, but it was $4.68 two days ago and $4.77 yesterday. When you average all the stations the prices for Lincoln County are incorrect. I have gotten to where I don’t normally even look at it any longer.”
I replied:
“I share the same frustration about the gas prices reported for Lincoln County. I thought I would let you know where I get the prices, and hopefully it will help the frustration a little.Â
“I gather my data from GasBuddy.com, and the information I look for is this, first I gather the lowest price for the largest city in each of the 22 counties. I would like to report on every city in Wyoming, but it just isn’t possible. You might find, like from your example, Cokeville, having a lower or higher price than Kemmerer.Â
“Next, I collect the average for county, using the live map from GasBuddy. This map encompasses reports sent in from every station in each county, and is more accurate overall than the report we give from Kemmerer alone. That being said, and this is where I share your frustration about Lincoln county, I do notice that the average for Lincoln does change drastically day to day.”
I hope this explains why you might see an anomaly in your specific area, that doesn’t match this report. If there is anyone in the oil or gasoline industry that could shed light on the price mood swings in our western counties, please let us know. Â
